Westport Sketchbook: Morning Scenes

I was driving my sons to school. Darkness was fading as a pink morning light mellowed the new awakening sky. We were hoping the car would begin to feel warm inside. As I drove down Compo South, on our way to see what color the sea would be, the pink of the light became more and more prominent. A gorgeous tree at the curve where the road meets the sea head-on struck me as stunningly beautiful. A woman was leaning over slightly with her dog. I (bringing my sketchbook everywhere with me) took a mental picture of this and sketched it out quickly after school drop-off. Then I had the most fun making a color version of this scene. First, I returned to the scene and drew more detail. Then I was able to draw and paint in full color. That was the best feeling, to capture the way the light was behind that tree! To see that color version and the morning light which saturated the sky behind this wonderful tree, go to www.westportnow.com.

And when I returned to the beach in the cold late morning, to draw that tree, I also drew Westporter Susan Thomsen, watching birds through her binoculars. She wasn’t sure what kind of birds they were out there splashing around beyond the shore.

This is a great sketch — would love to see all the colors. What a gift you have! Mom
What fun, Elaine! And, yes, like your mom said, what a gift you have!
I checked out the colored piture on Westportnow. Loved it. I just love what you are doing! So cool that you are capturing people doing their every day thing. It brings a wonderful feel to the simple things in life.
wonderful sketch! hope you’re keeping them all in a journal that could be published someday in book form!
It’s so neat to offer the starter sketch here and the final product on Westport Now. Every time I see these illustrations I want to visit your home town… the colors and the scenes are so peaceful yet invigorating at the same time… must be a cool place to live.
