Compo Beach Colors/Sketching the Sea
Posted on 17 October 2009

We live near the beach and my favorite thing to say to the kids is, “What color is the sea today?” as we drive by the vista of the Long Island Sound. Sometimes it’s bluer than even my idea of the color blue. But more often than not, it is almost colorless, it mystifies with a flat but willful pale nothing-color. Other times it has a very faint root beer or brown milk chocolate tint. It can be lake green and it can be golden, too, “like buttah” heating up under the sun. My favorite color of Compo Beach is in summer when it literally shimmers a glow of pale pearliness and the very air is luminescent pink. It is a truly magical thing to experience, it’s like the entire beach and the sky above it is in a prism, and you’re surrounded by a warm, enchanted aura. Today, a very cold and metallic day at sea, the tide is high because we’re expecting a real nor’easter and I think the grey tone of the tide is changing every few minutes.

Oh how wonderful to live by the sea! There is nothing that calms me more, intrigues me more — the majesty of God is just embodied in it. Whenever I try to meditate, it always takes me to the sea. I loved your sketches — I felt the wind and the coolness and heard the tide roaring. I’m sure this will lull me to sleep! Mom
Really beautiful imagery and it gives me the feeling of a blustery, cold day near the beach. Growing up in Miami, the beach never looked like this…it was always colorful, even on those dark, stormy days we had. Strange!
I have never been to Miami but the sea in the Gulf in Fla. is so absolutely unreal, with the white sand and aqua colors!
Like my mom, I love the roar of the sea.
Today the tide is super high here, dramatic!
some say the quartz in the sand also adds to a calming energy.
Love the sketch!
Suzanne,
I had not thought about the quartz in the sand but of course! And the salt, the salt is us. We need the salt to cleanse and clear us. They say it clears the aura. I saw my friend Susan w/ Martha Stewart at the beach not long ago and we had a big laugh about me needing to walk by the sea to “clean my aura”. It was funny, but I wasn’t joking, I love the feel of walking near the water (if not getting in it).

I love the sea and love that your sketch brought me to it! Especially since I live so far away from it. It is filled with such energy it almost over whelms me.
